Dilma Rousseff came onto the forefront of the political scene in Brazil rather abruptly. In 2010 she ran for president and won by a landslide. Although she had never been elected to any office before becoming president, Rousseff’s time in office has been incredibly successful. Forbes now ranks Rousseff as the 2nd most powerful woman in the world. Rousseff will be up for re-election in October, and with the 2014 FIFA World Cup set to kick off in Brazil this summer, Rousseff is one to watch in the upcoming months.

Rousseff spent the majority of her career doing government work – she held several public offices and acted as secretary of mines, energy and communications for Rio Grande do Sul. She proved to be a proficient leader. She eventually joined the Worker’s Party, and became a member of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s presidential campaign staff. It was soon evident that Lula hoped Rousseff would replace him when his second term came to a close. Since taking office on January 1, 2011, Rousseff’s policies have been consistent with her predecessor’s.

Rousseff’s presidency has been tarnished by a few recent events, and her strained relationship with U.S. president Barack Obama has made headlines. In April 2013, approximately one million Brazilians protested bus fares, and demanded that Rousseff remedy the financial issues that much of the population faced. In September 2013, Rousseff decided to postpone her visit to Washington D.C. due to allegations that the U.S. government had been spying on her.

This year will be telling for this now well-known politician. Here at Newscom we’ve gathered some of the best images of Brazilian president Dilma Rousseff.
