Yingluck Shinawatra is a member of the Pheu Thai party, and Thailand’s first female Prime Minister. Shinawatra has been in the news recently due to political unrest in Thailand. Many believe that Yingluck’s brother – former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who was ousted from power in 2006, might be influencing his sister’s decisions. Amidst these issues, Yingluck has agreed to a hold a General Election in July that will determine the future of the Thai government.

Born on June 21, 1967, Yingluck went on to earn two degrees in politics and pursue a career as a business woman at her brother Thaksin’s telecommunications firm. Yingluck held no prior political offices before being elected Prime Minister in 2011, but Yingluck has said that her experience in the corporate world has made her more than qualified.

Yingluck might be on to something, because unrest on the streets of Thailand calmed down when she took office. To her credit, Yingluck has established a solid relationship with the military, as well as with the royal palace. Despite her success, she has faced many challenges during her time in office… she was faced with the task of helping those affected by the extreme flooding that Thailand experienced in 2011. Additionally, there are those who believe that Yingluck may be a stand in for her brother who is currently in self-imposed exile… Some have even said that he is ruling the country from oversees.

As we wait for the results of this July’s election, we’ll be watching Prime Minister Shinawatra and the Thai government in the news. Follow us back to Newscom for an entire lightbox filled with images of Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra.
