At a June 19 coronation ceremony, Spain’s former Crown Prince Felipe became King Felipe VI. Felipe’s wife, Letzia, was crowned Spain’s Queen consort. Former Spanish king, Juan Carlos, who announced his decision to abdicate the throne in early June 2014. Juan Carlos’ abdication paved the way for his son and daughter-in-law to take on their new royal roles.

Although he has two elder sisters, the 46-year-old monarch is the only son of Juan Carlos. Felipe married Letizia Ortiz in 2004, and the couple have since had two daughters, Leonor and Sofia. King Felipe’s resume is impressive. The new monarch competed in the 1992 Olympic games for the Spanish yachting team, and also holds two degrees – a law degree from Madrid Autonomous University, and a degree in International Relations from Georgetown University.

Felipe and Letzia hope to improve many of the problems that Spain has faced recently and mend the tarnished reputation of the Spanish royal family. Head back to Newscom, where you can always find more images of King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia.
